Bootstrapping M-estimates in Regression and Autoregression with Infinite Variance

The limiting distribution for M -estimates in a regression or autoregression model with heavy-tailed noise is generally intractable, which precludes its use for inference purposes. Alternatively, the bootstrap can be used to approximate the sampling distribution of the M -estimate. In this paper, we show that the bootstrap procedure is asymptotically valid for a class of M -estimates provided t...

Genetic parameter estimates of body weight traits in Iran-Black sheep

The objective of the current study was to estimate the genetic parameters for body weight traits at different ages in Iran-Black sheep. Data collected during a 24-year period (1984-2008) on body weight were used to model the growth trajectory and estimate genetic parameters. Studied traits were birth weight (BW), weaning weight at 3 months of age (WW), 6 months weight (6MW), 9 months weight (9M...

Effect of genetic groups on estimates of additive genetic variance.

This study examined the effect of genetic grouping on REML estimates of additive genetic variance with an animal model with selected base populations. A simulated population of 40 animals (20 males and 20 females) was followed under selection or random mating conditions for 10 generations. Each population was replicated 20 or 50 times. Genetic grouping reduced estimates of additive genetic vari...

Liberating genetic variance through sex.

Genetic variation in fitness is the fundamental prerequisite for adaptive evolutionary change. If there is no variation in survival and reproduction or if this variation has no genetic basis, then the composition of a population will not evolve over time. Consequently, the factors influencing genetic variation in fitness have received close attention from evolutionary biologists. One key factor...

Bootstrapping the Stein Variance Estimator

This paper applies the bootstrap methods proposed by Efron (1979) to the Stein variance estimator proposed by Stein (1964). It is shown by Monte Carlo experiments that the parametric bootstrap yields the considerable accurate estimates of mean, standard error and confidence limits of the Stein variance estimator.
